The fountain was a water clock, or clepsydra. It featured sculptures of 12 Chinese zodiac signs arranged in a half-circle. The cultural treasure that was destroyed was a legend, and De Bethune wanted to pay homage by creating a set of watches with motifs that replicated it. The center of the dial is a bas relief featuring one the twelve mythological animal heads, which represent the Zodiac signs. There are actually twelve unique watches. A skilled craftsman scythes the stems from all of the plants that have been cultivated in a single plantation and then dyes them. The next step is to dye the stems by successively washing them and then drying them. After this, the artist will combine the straws in an impressive composition, taking into consideration not only the shades but also the direction the fibers are facing on the plant. |
